A Teacher Shaped by the World

Almetta Pitts is a third-culture professional. She grew up between many cultures. Her identity as a teacher was built in classrooms on more than one continent. She is not simply a teacher who studied languages. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature — a deep academic grounding in the language, stories, and ways of thinking she brings into every classroom. She also holds a Master of Social Work (MSW), the graduate clinical degree that sits behind her LICSW licensure and 4,000+ hours of direct counseling experience. She is also someone who has lived the experience of entering a new country, learning a new language, and navigating an unfamiliar system. She brings all of that lived knowledge into every classroom she enters.

Almetta spent 4.5 years living and working in South Korea. There, she co-taught English with a focus on social and emotional learning at the middle school level. She also lectured at the university level in English and in Social Work. She designed curricula that placed both language learning and student wellbeing at the center. Her teaching has never been only about content. It has always been about building community.

As an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Washington Graduate School of Social Work, she brings that same care and rigor to higher education. She teaches complex ideas about systems and policy in ways that are clear, culturally grounded, and built around the student.

한국에서 4년 반 동안 생활하고 일한 경험을 바탕으로, 사회정서학습을 통합한 영어 공동 수업을 중학교 수준에서 진행했으며, 대학교 수준에서는 영어와 사회복지학을 강의했습니다. 언어 습득과 학생의 마음 건강을 모두 중심에 두는 교육과정을 개발했습니다. 그녀의 수업은 지식을 전달하는 공간만이 아니었습니다. 공동체를 만드는 공간이었습니다.

🌟 Spotlight: 주목할 프로젝트: Creo en tu Mente

During her AmeriCorps service in Federal Way Public Schools, Almetta created Creo en tu Mente — which means "I Believe in Your Mind." This was a bilingual social-emotional learning campaign for multilingual students. It used mental health messages that were culturally grounded and easy to understand. This project shows the heart of who she is as a teacher: someone who builds learning environments that hold the whole student — in their full language, from their full culture.
